tabla

The tabla is a popular indian percussion instrument consisting of a pair of drums, one larger than the other. The drums produce a distinctive sound that is tuned to a particular note (to suit the composition of the accompaining melodic instrument).

There are a number of unique features about the tabla:

• over 20 different sounds (bols) can be produced
• all sounds have a name and they are learnt verbally first
• both drums are tuned
• tuning paste (called Syahi or gaab) is applied to both drums
